Shadowing: The Danger of the Dark – 5 Day Devotional

This devotional follows the sermon’s call to “shadowbox” against temptation by practicing daily habits that keep you close to Jesus. Over five days, you’ll learn to recognize the pull of the world, clothe yourself with Christ, and build a simple, repeatable plan for spiritual defense.

Day 1

1 John 2:15-17

The world is skilled at drawing you in and convincing you that you need what it offers, but Scripture warns that loving the world competes with loving the Father. The sermon highlighted how the desires of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life can quietly become a pattern—especially when we are simply “going through the motions” while our hearts drift.

Shadowboxing begins with awareness. You cannot defend against what you refuse to name, and you cannot pursue God’s will while clinging to what is fading. Today is about letting God turn on the light: identifying where the world has been shaping your cravings, your attention, and your sense of identity.

  • Where have you noticed your desires pulling you away from wholehearted love for God?
  • Which of the three areas feels most active right now: desires of the flesh, lust of the eyes, or pride of life?
  • What is one “fading” thing you’ve been treating like it will last forever?
  • What does “going through the motions” look like in your spiritual life, and what would sincerity look like instead?
  • Choose one small boundary for today that reduces the world’s influence (media, spending, comparison, or a habit) and commit to it.

Day 2

Romans 13:14

The sermon’s central strategy was clear: “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” Clothing is not a one-time decision; it is a daily choice to wrap your life in Christ’s presence, truth, and leadership. When you put Him on, you don’t just try harder—you live closer, and closeness changes what you reach for.

Clothing yourself with Christ also means you stop pre-planning sin. Temptation often wins before the moment arrives because we have already rehearsed how we will gratify the flesh. Today is about building a defense by replacing rehearsal of the flesh with rehearsal of obedience—through Scripture, prayer, and intentional choices.

  • What would it look like for you to “put on Jesus” before your day begins in a practical way?
  • Where do you tend to pre-plan gratification (time, money, screens, fantasies, attention), and what is one alternative plan?
  • What verse, truth, or prayer could you keep close today as a reminder that you belong to Christ?
  • Who could you invite into your life for accountability so you’re not fighting temptation alone?
  • Set a 5-minute appointment today for Scripture and prayer, and treat it as non-negotiable.

Day 3

Proverbs 27:20

The sermon pointed out a hard truth: human appetite is rarely satisfied. Like an endless scroll or the next upgrade, desire promises fulfillment but keeps moving the finish line. If you don’t name this pattern, you will assume that the next purchase, experience, or achievement will finally quiet your heart.

Shadowboxing against unsatisfied desire means practicing contentment before the craving spikes. Instead of letting your eyes and mind lead you, you train your heart to recognize the lie: “More will fix me.” God offers something better—peace rooted in Him, gratitude for what you have, and wisdom to want what lasts.

  • Where do you feel “never satisfied” showing up most strongly right now?
  • What lie do you tend to believe about what the next thing will do for you?
  • How has comparison affected your joy, generosity, or relationships recently?
  • Write down three specific gifts from God in your life today and thank Him for each one.
  • Choose one act of contentment today: give something away, stop browsing, celebrate someone else, or enjoy what you already have without upgrading it.

Day 4

James 4:4

Scripture uses strong language to wake us up: friendship with the world puts us at odds with God. The sermon emphasized that worldliness is not only “bad things” done in secret; it can be the public, respectable drift of letting culture set your priorities. When the world becomes your companion, your heart slowly becomes divided.

Shadowboxing here is about allegiance. You practice saying “yes” to God in small decisions so you’re ready to say “no” when pressure rises. Today is an invitation to examine loyalties: where you’re seeking approval, comfort, status, or control more than you’re seeking the Father.

  • Where do you feel divided loyalty—wanting God but also wanting the world’s approval or rewards?
  • What cultural message has been discipling you lately more than Scripture has?
  • When do you most feel pressure to perform or maintain an image?
  • What is one decision today that would clearly signal your allegiance to Jesus (time, integrity, humility, generosity, purity)?
  • Pray honestly: ask God to reveal any friendship with the world and to strengthen your love for Him above everything else.

Day 5

John 3:16

The sermon connected spiritual defense to communion and the sacrifice of Jesus: God loved, God gave, and we respond by believing and receiving life. Your fight against darkness is not powered by shame or self-improvement; it is fueled by grace. When you remember what Christ has done, temptation loses some of its persuasive power because you are no longer trying to earn worth—you are living from it.

Today, bring the last four days together into a simple plan: stay close to Jesus in Word and prayer, recognize the world’s pull, practice contentment, and choose allegiance daily. Shadowboxing becomes a lifestyle of readiness, not fear—training your heart to run to Christ quickly, because His love is stronger than what the world offers.

  • How does remembering God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice change the way you face temptation?
  • What is one area where you need to move from shame-driven effort to grace-driven obedience?
  • Which practice from the last four days do you most need to continue this week, and when will you do it?
  • Who could you encourage or pray with so you both live more alert and more anchored in Jesus?
  • Write a short “defense plan” for the next seven days: one Scripture to revisit, one daily prayer, one boundary, one gratitude practice, and one act of obedience.
